Product Design
As humans, we are obsessed with the image of ourselves. From the myth of Narcissus to Apples iPhone X front-facing-studio-lighting-selfie-camera, the long trend of ‘human self-documentation’ has never faded. For as long as we’ve been able to, humans captured their own faces—evolving from cave paintings to commissioned portraits, then into Instagram and SnapChat selfies. The Hydrastick™is a critique on a society that has over-indulged in the image of the self. Where once, a portrait represented an actual person and a story, the contemporary selfie in nothing more than a decapitated human head with nothing else left to analyze in the frame. The Hydrastick™ is the answer to the question, “If we truly have become a civilization so self obsessed with the image of ourselves, then why not make a truly self-obsessed object that makes self-obsession even easier?
Research indicates that our faces are mathematically attractive. Simply put, certain parts of our faces illicit specific reactions.
Measurements of the arms were based off research by Dr. Anukka Lindell:
1. Tilt face 15° to the right.
2. Right side appears more sympathetic and intelligent.
3. Tilt face 30° to the left
4. Left side appears more attractive and open, resulting in higher attraction rates.
5. 41% prefer left cheek
6. 31.5% prefer the right cheek
7. 19.5% prefer midline
Try it if you don't believe it.
